Self-confidence isn’t something we are born with, we come into this world as a blank slate, tiny helpless little babies. Later on in life we learn lessons, face unhealthy people and go through experiences that shape and mold us into who we are today. Many of us go through the gauntlet of life and come out the other side with a poor and negative self-belief, we don’t have confidence in ourselves. I have handpicked 17 self confidence quotes to help boost your self-belief and increase your self confidence.
Self Confidence Definition

In this article I would like to help you discover ways you can boost your self -belief so that you can discover how powerful you can be in your own world. I have battled with my own low self-esteem for many years and to be honest I still do sometimes. Having a healthy level of self confidence takes time, work and persistence, it’s unrealistic to think that you can remain confident without putting in some kind of work.
We are constantly facing roadblocks in our lives that might damage our confidence. The break up you are going through, the bad review you got at work, the nasty comment from a stranger or your own negative self-talk. The secret to building your self confidence is how you manage to get up after each blow. Do you lie down and accept defeat or do you jump straight back up with a new plan of attack?
I use many different strategies of building my self-esteem on a daily basis and one of them is reading different self confidence quotes to myself. I have written some down and placed them next to my work computer. I also have two of them in my bathroom next to my mirror. I read these self confidence quotes everyday. Having them near me helps me to read them regularly and when I read them regularly it helps me to stay confident.
Read through these self confidence quotes below and choose one or two that resonate with you. Write them them down and put it somewhere where you can see it often. I’ve even memorized a few of the quotes and I use them like affirmations. I say them to myself over and over whenever I fell like I need a bit of a confidence boost.

6 Ways To Gain And Maintain A High Self-Esteem
I hope you enjoyed those self confidence quotes and that you have found one or two that you like. I want to now discuss a few ways you can maintain a high self-esteem. Having a high self-esteem simply means that you have a realistic and appreciative opinion of yourself. By following these 6 steps and implementing them into your life you will increase your self esteem in leaps and bounds.
1. Become mindful of your negative self-talk
We all have thoughts, experts suggest that we have between 50 000 to 80 000 thoughts per day. That’s a lot of thinking! Think about how many of those thoughts are negatively directed at yourself. This is negative self-talk and it is detrimental to your self confidence.
Becoming more mindful and aware of when you are talking to yourself negatively will help you to identify the thoughts. Once you identify these negative thoughts you will be able to distance yourself from the feelings that they bring up.
When you catch your mind criticizing simply take note of what is happening. Allow yourself to observe the thoughts almost as if you are a third person in the room. When you can observe these thoughts you dissolve the power they have over you. Remind yourself that thoughts are not facts and replace the negative self-talk with something positive.
2. Adjust your story
What is your personal narrative? We all have narratives, its a story that we created for ourselves based on our past experiences. It is how we perceive ourselves, it is our self-image. These narratives can be extremely hard to change. If you have a predominantly negative narrative you have to ask yourself why? What is in your narrative that has been learnt from someone else? If it has been learnt from someone else it can be unlearned.
An example of my story:
I use to tell myself is that I wasn’t good enough which led me to believe that I didn’t deserve love or to be loved. After identifying these core beliefs I realized that it was learnt from my father. He made me believe that I wasn’t good enough. I took his belief and concreted it as my own. Just like I had learnt this negative and damaging belief I could unlearn it too. I took action to change my story and to this day I am still taking action to change it.
To unlearn this these deep core beliefs I recommend doing affirmations. What do you really want to believe about yourself? Think about that and create a great affirmation that can support that belief.
One of the quotes as said by Mahatma Gandhi seems to fit perfectly with the idea you become what you repeatedly think. This is the power of our thoughts and the effect it has on how our realities shape up.
“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be” Mahatma Gandhi
3. Comparison is the thief of joy
We all do it, the comparison game. When we compare ourselves to others we kill our happiness. The key to avoiding the comparison trap is to become more accepting of ourselves, our circumstances and our lives.
In the age of social media it’s easier than ever to fall into the comparing game. I see it all around me, in my friends and family. Its sad to see how upset it can make people. Comparison will always lead to negative self-talk and negative self belief. It just isn’t worth it, keep your self esteem high by not comparing yourself to people.
This one didn’t make it into my self confidence quotes list but it’s one that I will always remember because of how powerfully true it is.
“Comparison Is the Thief of Joy”
4. What are my strengths
We all have weaknesses but we also all have strengths, the challenge is to find what your strengths are and build around them. I am creative, that is one of my strengths. I totally suck at numbers and accounting, its definitely one of my weaknesses. Recognizing this allows me to build around being more creative and leaving the taxes to someone else.
So the next time you mess up or fail at something remember your strengths. Use your strengths to instill confidence in yourself when you are facing challenges. Most importantly use your strengths and build upon them.
5. Get a gym workout
Get up and get a gym workout or if you aren’t part of a gym just take a walk, run, skip, yoga, pilates whatever, just get active. Regular exercise has many benefits for the body. It also has many benefits for the mind. Working out empowers you and builds your self-esteem. I know that it’s hard to workout and it takes a lot of will power. The fact that its a difficult thing to do is the reason it promotes a high self esteem. When you get through a workout there is a sense of accomplishment, something you can be proud of. Read our article on working out mindfully here.
6. The power of forgiveness
When we struggle to forgive other people or ourselves it can hold us back. By holding onto resentment we allow ourselves to get stuck in the past. Past resentments can turn into a negative cycle that we repeat over and over to ourselves. Holding onto the past is never a good thing. In this article I talk about 7 techniques you can use to sop living in the past.
Learn to forgive yourself and learn to forgive others, free yourself from the past and any resentments you hold onto. Notice what happens to your self -esteem when you start learning to forgive.
Below you will find a Buddhist forgiveness meditation. Read it aloud to yourself every now and then.
“If I have hurt or harmed anyone, knowingly or unknowingly, I ask forgiveness. If anyone has hurt or harmed me, knowingly or unknowingly, I forgive them. For the ways I have hurt myself, knowingly or unknowingly, I offer forgiveness.”
The Skill Of Self Confidence
Dr. Ivan Joseph talks confidence. He refers to it as the skill of self confidence. Just like I was saying confidence is a skill, it’s something that you obtain through constant work and repetition. It’s a great talk and he really brings home the points on building your self-esteem.
Self Confidence Quotes That I Repeat Daily
To wrap up this article id like to leave you with my 3 self confidence quotes that I repeat daily. They have brought me an immense amount of value over the years and they have taught me about the power of self confidence.
Self confidence quote #1
“A true genius admits that he/she knows nothing”
Albert Einstein as smart as he was knew that he also knew nothing. The first time I read this quote I had to sit and think about it for a while. It confused me a bit because at the time I was young and thought I knew quite a bit already. I pondered on this quote for weeks before I finally gave in to it’s message. We really do know nothing. As smart as you might be in this world you still know nothing.
When I let go of trying to have the answers for everything I became lighter and my life became a bit more manageable. There’s nothing better than allowing yourself to say to someone else that you dont have the answers to everything. There are people in the world that will fight you tooth and nail to be right. Even if they are clearly wrong. They will still fight. This ferocity to be right stems from low self esteem. When you can admit that you don’t have the answer you gain strength and you open up an opportunity to learn.
Another variation of this kind of thinking goes like this.
“I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.”
Self confidence quote #2
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”
Exactly what she said. The only person that you allow yourself to listen to should be you. This means that you should replace that negative self talk with something more positive. All to often in my life I allowed what other people thought of me to dictate how I felt. This self confidence quote helped me to understand that I am in control of what I let into my life.
Self confidence quote #3
“Believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart” Steve Jobs
You said it Steve, this quote ties in with faith. Faith that things will work out in the future. Having a strong self belief in your plans and your outcomes will build a strong confidence in yourself. I’m a huge believer of visualizations and the power to create our own realities.
Those are the three self confidence quotes I hold near and dear to my heart. I dont think I would be where I am today if it wasn’t for them. I love the fact that you can repeat them like affirmations and extract years of wisdom in one short paragraph.
